The Umpqua Fishery Enhancement Derby is a steelhead fishing derby that donates all of its proceeds to local fish restoration and education projects.
The event begins with “Student Day: Project Fish” on Wednesday where 15-20 high school students spend a day working with ODFW staff at Rock Creek Fish Hatchery and learn about spawning fish.
“Kids Day” is on Thursday where 50-60 local fifth grade students from a local elementary school are treated to a morning of fishing on Cooper Creek Reservoir with our Derby Guides, jet boat rides, and lunch as recognition for their work with their hatchery program on their school campus. The catch-and-release steelhead fishing take place on Friday and Saturday on the North, South, and Main Umpqua rivers.
The Derby draws fishermen from throughout Oregon and the best fishing guides in Southern Oregon.
Thursday evening is a crab feed and raffle for the Derby Guides and fishermen.
Friday evening a banquet is held to raise funds for fishery enhancement, restoration, and educational projects. The 2014 Derby contributed $91,500 towards projects in the Umpqua Basin in addition to contributing $14,500 of protein in the form of fish to a local food bank. Over the past 22 years, the Derby has contributed over $1.6 million in funding toward local projects.
